Safety and efficiency are the key factors in the construction of the SR 99 tunnel, since there will be safety requirements ensuring that it will be adequate for the volume of traffic by using lighting and intelligent transportation systems, while the ventilation, drainage and fire-suppression systems will prevent incidents in accidents.
At each end of the tunnel, there will be located two centers, the north and south portal operations buildings, managing these systems. The south operations building will sit on the south side of South King Street, while the north operations building will be located at the corner of Harrison Street and Sixth Avenue North. These buildings will house maintenance vehicles, ventilation fans, emergency power, repair shops, radio equipment, the operations center, offices and crew rooms.
It is impressive the fact that, the yellow stacks that can be seen in both buildings, have the ability to move 160.000 cu ft of air per minute! It seems, therefore, that the buildings' "safety yellow" ventilation stacks will not keep up with the surroundings.
The travellers will feel the transition from the forested landscapes of the Puget Sound to the rhythm of the city since the underground structures for the ventilation and vehicular elevator shafts are underway, and drivers are able to see the construction site running parallel on the west side of the Seattle Pacific Hotel.
