A two-mile long heavily eroded shoreline was reconstructed along the Delaware River in Salem County, New Jersey. The beach's erosion is attributed primarily to Superstorm Sandy and its reconstruction was carried out by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Completion of the restoration works was announced by the New Jersey Environmental Protection Agency early this year.
One of the seven major coastal and flood projects in the state, executed by Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, which was contracted by USACE was completed early this year. The Oakwood beach reconstruction project, about eight miles southwest of the city of Salem, was a joint venture between the Army Corps' Philadelphia District and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. It involved the construction of a 50-foot-wide berm at an elevation of about six feet, pouring about 346,000 cubic yards of sand. Total cost was estimated at $9.9 million and was shared between the federal government and the state on a 65/35 basis. What is even more important than the project's completion, is the USACE and DEP agreement to periodically refill the beach over the next 50 years following the same spending scheme.
Additional beach restoration projects for 2015 include works from Brigantine Inlet to Cape May Inlet (Margate and Longport); Sandy Hook to Manasquan Inlet (Allenhurst, Deal, Loch Arbour and Long Branch); and the Northern Ocean County peninsula from Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat Inlet (Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, Mantoloking, Brick, Toms River, Lavallette, Seaside Heights, Seaside Park and Berkeley).
