On Friday October 17th, 25 years have passed from the devastating - magnitude 6.9 - Loma Prieta earthquake. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the earthquake, which killed 63 people and left thousands homeless, events were organized across the Bay Area.
The Loma Prieta earthquake occurred during the World Series between the Giants and A's at 5:04 p.m. on October 17, 1989. It caused significant damage in residences and infrastructure including the buckling of a section of the Bay Bridge, and the flattening of the Cypress freeway. A major fire was also set off int eh Marina District.
In Santa Cruz, Clyde Powell, an ABC 7 News cameraman was the first to capture, in a video, the inside of the crack that opened up in the nearby mountains at ground zero, using a Handycam. Watch the video below with a view from the inside of the crack and the TV coverage from 1989!
The pictures included in the photo gallery provided below were taken right after the event and reveal the extent of the damage.
