The unfortunate boy, Julen Rosello, fell into the borehole after moving away from his parents who did not notice his absence as they were preparing lunch in the countryside of town Totalan. Nobody saw the boy falling into the large hole but DNA obtained by hair samples found nearby confirmed the tragic incident.
The diameter of the borehole is 25 centimeters so no adult could enter inside to save Julen. Therefore, rescuers had to find a new way to access his position. Julen was thought to be about 2/3 of the way down to the end of the borehole. However, accessing this point was not easy due to hardened soil and rock that block the path.
Officials decided to drill a parallel shaft to the borehole in which miners tunneled the last 4 meters horizontally to access the cavity. On Saturday, 26 of January, the dead body of the boy was found inside the borehole. "At 1:25 a.m., the rescue teams reached the area of the well where they were looking for Julen and they found the lifeless body of the little one," said a government spokesperson in Malaga.
In 2017, Julen's parents had lost another son who suffered from heart attack at the age of 3. During the rescue operations, they were devastated but they did not lose their faith. "It feels like we have been waiting for months. We are not going to give up ... We have the hope that an angel is going to show up for my son to come out alive," Jose Rosello, Julen's father had stated.
