A pedestrian bridge in Moscow collapsed on New Year's Eve injuring 13 people.
The 350-meter wooden bridge, located in Moscow's Gorky Park above a skating ring, was crowded as people were about to watch the fireworks at Gorky Park, marking the beginning of 2019. The height of the bridge was three meters and the fall caused severe injuries to 3 out of the 13 victims.
According to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, each victim will receive $3,700-$7,400 compensation. He immediately fired the director of Gorky Park, Marina Lyulchuk who was considered responsible for the incident.
"I visited people who were injured in the Gorky bridge collapse. Thank God there were no grave injuries, yet it badly spoiled the festive moment. The responsible parties will be punished," Mr. Sobyanin stated. "I have commissioned the department of culture to dismiss the park director, although I must say that this decision was not easy for me," he added.
Authorities will conduct an investigation concerning the causes of the collapse. Officials from Moscow city government stated that the failure was probably provoked by "technical fault in the skating rink's structural elements."
