Heavy rains exceeded a dam causing disastrous flooding and triggering landslides in central Indonesia on January, 23, 2019.
At least 8 people, 5 in Jeneponto district and 3 in Gowa, were reported dead, including a man who was electrocuted and two infants who drowned. In total, 9 districts were affected and 4 people are still missing. 2,000 more have evacuated their residences, according to Indonesia's disaster agency.
The chief of Gowa district, Adnan Purichta Ichsann, stated that the staff working at the dam did not have enough time to warn authorities about the water release. He also added that the death toll could rise as many areas have been struck by landslides and are still being searched.
The agency's spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho commented: "Extreme rain that started to fall on Tuesday (22 of January) in several areas of South Sulawesi caused the flooding." The floods have made rescue operations extremely difficult but rescue teams are still working to find survivors.
The disaster has damaged several bridges and caused severe power outages in all the affected regions.
