The north part of Philippines was struck by Super Typhoon Mangkhut which triggered ferocious floods and landslides killing at least 64 people.
Benquet province suffered most casualties with 38 people reported dead (most of them in 2 landslides) and 37 still missing, according to the police. In the village of Ucab in Itogon city, miners are feared to have been trapped due to another landslide.
Just a day after the catastrophic event, the full extent of the damage has not been evaluated yet. People on the northern coast of Luzon Island returned back to their residences to find almost everything crumbled. Adelfa Lunato, a victim of the typhoon said: "It was so devastating to see that our house was destroyed. We were all crying. Seeing this damage for the first time, it was like losing our will to live." Adelfa's family cannot afford to rebuild the house and at this point they seem desperate. Despite the immense floods, it was the wind that caused the extensive damage to the buildings.
The typhoon also damaged the agricultural area of Cagayan as crop damage may be unprecedented. Farmers did their best to save as much as they could the day before the storm. Rodel Rieta, a local farmer, stated: "The farms are flooded, and if rice is submerged in water none of it can be harvested. I know it's going to be a harder life now." The typhoon affected more than half a million people across 433 cities of the country.
The storm continued to hit the southern coast of China on Sunday, 16 of September 2018 killing 4 people. Guangdong region was struck by winds of 100mph with more than 2.4 million people evacuating their residences.
