At least 46 people have died and another 33 remain missing as a tropical depression dumps heavy rains across central and northern Vietnam.
The northern Yen Bai and Hoa Binh provinces were the most severely hit, with reports of widespread inundation, landslides and submerged houses. A landslide triggered by rains on Thursday, October 12, destroyed four houses and buried 18 people in Vietnam's Hoa Binh province. The landslide occurred at about 01:00 local time, in Khanh Village, Tan Lac District. On Wednesday, a river bridge collapsed, sweeping away several people – among them a Vietnam News Agency journalist who was reporting on the floods.
Vietnam's Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said that authorities were discharging water from dams to control water levels. Hoa Binh dam, Vietnam's largest hydroelectric dam, opened eight gates to discharge water for the first time in years.
The heavy rains began on Monday and over a three-day period some parts of central and northern Vietnam recorded up to 500 mm of rain. BBC says that local authorities declare at least 16,000 submerged houses. According to the latest reports, 217 houses have been swept away by floodwaters, 1,059 have been severely damaged by strong winds and water and 16,740 buildings have sustained minor or moderate damage.
According to the Vietnam disaster prevention agency, the death toll was one of the highest ever recorded in the country due to flooding.
