Intense rainfall caused a major landslide event in the northern Argentine province Jujuy last week.
The landslide occurred on Tuesday, January 10 and caused significant damage to infrastructure, while about 1,000 people were forced to evacuate the area. Two people were killed and at least five were injured, according to the Argentine Red Cross Authorities.
According to the AGU Blogosphere relevant report, at least two high mobility mudslides were developed during the event, consisting of very fine-grained materials, similar to lahars. The towns of Volcan & Tumbaya were affected the most: water from the heavy rainfall reached 1.2 meters depth in the town of Tumbaya, while mud levels into the houses of Volcan reached 50 – 80 cm. Two parts of National Route 9 - one of the region's main roads – were entirely washed out.
Due to the mudflows, the annual Dakar rally (that was passing through the region last week) had to cancel its ninth stage. Most of the competition vehicles, working personnel and logistics had to follow a detour of about 200 km to avoid the Route 9 cut – off stretches.
Cleanup crews are currently working at the region and machinery was employed to clear National Route 9. Most of the evacuated locals are still not able to return to their homes.
