A tragic incident occurred on March 6, 2025, when a bridge under demolition collapsed on the E42 motorway in La Louvière, Wallonia. The collapse resulted in the death of one worker and injuries to three others. Emergency responders, divers, and structural specialists rushed to the site, working alongside stability experts to assess the damage and ensure safety.
Structural Failure and Immediate Response
The bridge, which crossed the Canal du Centre, had been under construction since February 2024. Part of the structure collapsed onto a barge positioned below, trapping workers and pulling down construction cranes. Among the 12 workers present, four were rushed to the hospital. Sadly, one of them, who had fallen into the canal, succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities quickly put an emergency plan in place, closing the parallel bridge on the E42 as a precaution. Traffic was rerouted via the A501 and E19 motorways, while navigation on the canal was suspended until further notice. Over 40 responders assisted in the operation, and a support center was set up for victims and their families.

Investigation into the Collapse
A detailed investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the collapse. Labour auditor Sophie Salens confirmed that authorities are examining whether safety regulations were violated, as multiple contractors were involved in the demolition process. Experts are considering potential factors such as structural instability, improper crane placement, and material weaknesses.
A court-appointed forensic engineer specializing in stability has been assigned to assess the risks before any construction work resumes. While criminal liability remains a possibility, investigators are also considering whether this was an unavoidable accident. The investigation is expected to be lengthy, with findings crucial for improving safety measures in future infrastructure projects.
