WSDOT is currently undertaking a landslide prevention project along its Amtrak Cascades rail corridor aiming in eliminating service disruptions due to the frequent landslide occurrence of the past years. $16.1 million of federal funds will be used in identifying landslide susceptible locations along the rail line extending from Vancouver, Washington to the Canadian border, designing and constructing slope stabilization projects.
Tasks planned by WSDOT include, initially shaping the Landslide Mitigation Work Group, consisting of Amtrak, construction companies as well as municipal and state agencies. Work Group will be responsible for locating areas with high risk of landslide occurrence, raising awareness of landslide risk to property owners along the Seattle Everett rail line and also designing and constructing six slope stabilization projects.
Slope stabilization works involve construction of retaining walls, slide detection fences, issuing early warnings of active landslides, installation of drainage systems and performing erosion controls, aiming in eliminating service disruption due to landslides occurring especially during the rainy season. About 232,000 passengers will benefit from the project, avoiding the required 48hour closure of the rail line after each landslide. Note that service disruption was necessary to allow cleaning of the tracks, inspection and evaluation of adjacent slopes to ensure train safety.
Apart from minimizing service disruptions, the project is expected to improve safety, decrease property damage and associated repair costs. The project started in 2012 and within 2015 three remaining slope stabilization projects are expected to be completed.
