The road collapsed after what appears to be a deep excavation failure at the nearby active construction site.
At least six cars fell into the 10m deep hole in Rome, when the ground collapsed beneath them at around 5.30pm, on Wednesday, February 14. The collapse happened in the Baldunia neighborhood in the north west of the city.
Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi visited the site and stressed that the incident, which appears to have shaved off the entire side of the road, occurred at an active construction site, and that the situation is under control.
No injuries were reported, however the police and fire brigade were deployed at the scene to ensure that the two nearby residential buildings were safely evacuated. The area was cordoned off by rescue teams due to the risk of further land subsidence.
An investigation is being carried out into how the shoring collapsed at the construction site where new housing is being built.
